Superb review! I've taught this book in multicultural American lit/language courses (undergraduate and graduate) and for some reason I never quite figured out, it was the most positively received of all the stories/texts I assigned (N. Scott Momaday's House Made of Dawn was the most hated--everybody in two different sections loathed it).

I had students who said they'd never read a novel on their own tell me they stayed up all night reading it. It led to some incredible discussions. Just amazing.
