Oh, I also know what's up with Apple: It's a blind spot at the top. Steve Jobs isn't a reader himself and doesn't see the market. E-books, stand-alone and for various readers, do really well in the iTunes App Store, and this is a big surprise to a lot of people at Apple. (Though not to the quality developers who told them this would be the case.) From time to time John Gruber (http://daringfireball.net/) has excellent comments of his own and excellent links to discussion by others about it.
