From your description it sounds like the narrative structure is typical Confucian structure. Even for those of us trained in the Aristotlian method, the structure tends to work for stories. It makes for a lot of communication breakdowns in research papers, though.

BTW, if you're interested in trying to learn Mandarian, look up the Confucius Institute. It's possible you have one out by you. Ours offers lessons in Mandarian for free to people as young as six.
