In my experience, the longer the period between the finishing and the editing, the better the story usually would look, although time is not a luxury I can always afford.

For me it's not that the story looks better, but it looks clearer. It's less fuzzy, I can see it for what it is instead of what is in my head. But you're right, time is a luxury one often does not have.
