Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] nwhyte for the heads up on this:

Aminatou Haidar a Sahrawi activist who has been campaigning for the rights and freedom of the Sahrawi people has been arrested by the Moroccan government. More details and links are at [livejournal.com profile] nwhyte's post, but she was arrested after returning from the Unites States to accept the Civil Courage Prize.

As an American, I am appalled and shocked that Secretary of State Clinton recently affirmed Morocco's position and stated that autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is the only realistic solution for ending the more than 30-year dispute. I am appalled whenever my government sides with those it needs, whether or not the things they are doing are moral, humane, or right.

I am also ashamed that such actions have not been well publicized here in the states, or really anywhere. Because it seems shameful to me that the United States takes the view that somehow, someway it's okay for this to be happening, even in violation of rulings from the UN Security Council and the International Court of Justice.

I am ashamed that a country which decries itself as defenders of liberty and freedom would act to keep other people from that same kind of freedom.
