I read this one just over a year ago, as part of my general interest in the sixteenth century. It is pretty clear to me that Elizabeth was abused by her stepfather as a teenager, and that gives Weir's psycho-sexual speculations more foundation. Though certainly she would also have been making the political calculations about marriage which you mention, and I certainly wouldn't want to imply that survivors of such abuse can never themselves marry.
