Oh, also, because I love this (mystery) series so much: Kate Shugak is tiny and not superpowered, so she often has to rely on her wits to take down the bad guys, especially if there's a lot of them or they are bigger than she is. She can use a gun and knows how to fight, but doesn't go rushing into them when there are other, smarter options. And she's partners with a half-wolf, who respects and listens to her. (I also like that she's the emotionally damaged/closed off one with the tragic past that made her the hardened PI she is today, and Jack, her significant other, is more emotionally stable and not very angsty.)
