I have some... issues... w/Patricia Briggs, but one of the things I like about her Mercy Thompson books is that Mercy is a mechanic & frequently worried about money, & IIRC at some points in the books some potential shapeshifter/vampire adventure will come up & she'll be like, "Dammit, I can't AFFORD to shut the garage & go traipsing off for 3 days w/o working!"
