I reviewed the first Dresden book, "Storm Front (http://fiction-theory.livejournal.com/145640.html#cutid1) last year. It wasn't the best thing I'd ever read, but not the worst. My husband liked the series more than I did and he's read almost all the books (which he got from his brother. I married into a family of geeks and it's GORGEOUS).
I did note the things you mentioned, especially that his first person narration is, like, 60% less grating than most UF books, so there's that. I think I was a bit spoiled for the books by the TV show because I really loved the TV show.
I'm glad you liked the post! And definitely check those recs. Healey's Guardian of the Dead has now found a place on my "Run, Don't Walk To Find This" list, and I'm definitely going to try to find Kiernan's "Murder of Angels" at my first opportunity.
One thing I really love about posts like this is that it gives us a chance to not just talk about what flops, but about the gems we've found along the way and share that information with others.
