I always thought it was because they (the vampires) were excellent long term investors with mighty interest rates.
I have a scene in my current UF where the full-human best friend asks my main character if there are vampires and gets mildly disappointed that there aren't. (I am pretty much refusing to go the vampire route, despite whoever it disappoints. Weres, yes. Trolls, yes. Vampires, no.)
