Practical examples of theoretical things
1. Scalzi makes mistake in wrongly (and offensively) defining and banning slash from his fan-fic contest. Meg is a sad panda and thinks, "Great, will the fail never end?"
2. Several people comment to tell Scalzi what is wrong and why with the statement he made.
3. Scalzi reads these comments.
4. Scalzi actually listens and admits he was wrong and apologizes. Does not act like his intent just to stay away from sexually explicit material is more important than the ACTUAL things he said.
5. The world does not explode or end. Scalzi does not die or get sucked into a hell dimension because he owned up to being wrong and said sorry.
6. Meg's respect for Scalzi dials UP a few notches. Now considers moving his books higher on the list of books to read/buy in the future.
7. Meg then wishes many other SF/F authors currently committing epic fail would consider taking Scalzi's example in other discussions. Because, as Meg observes, owning your failures, learning from them, apologizing and moving on is actually more efficient and a lot less damaging than arguing and defending and derailing and ignoring endlessly. Also, the logic is better.
