megwrites: Picture of books with quote from Cicero: "a room without books is like a body without a soul" (books)
Dear Writer of the Novel I'm Currently Reading,

I want to enjoy this novel, really I do. But you're making that difficult for me.

When the protagonist, who I dearly want to like, is faced with a demonic predator who's coming straight at her takes time out of her near-death experience to reflect on the scenery and how wacky her life has become, I lose interest. Especially when you've been doing this all along.

Call me nuts, but I just don't buy that someone with newly found powers who is staring down at a possessed cougar (and not the boyfriend stealing over-40 hussy type, either) would do that. I would think that their thoughts would be more along the lines of: OMFGWTFBBQ, COUGAR?!, and then they would proceed to either run or fight or get eaten.

Right now, I'm sort of rooting for the cougar.

So, in conclusion, it's perfectly fine for a character to think about her life, and the utterly cliche "he's my ex that I hate but still love and want to have hot sex with" relationship that she's in - but maybe save it until after your heroine is not about to die.

Just a thought.

Sincerely,
Your Not So Pleased Reader

PS - Suddenly having an object appear on a character in chapter 12 when it wasn't there for the last eleven chapters and acting like it's been there all along does not help your credibility with me. Neither does suddenly talking about characters that you've not introduced and expecting me to know what's going on.
