megwrites: Picture of books with quote from Cicero: "a room without books is like a body without a soul" (books)
It's a nerdtastical family tradition of ours to go to the Book Barn in Niantic/East Lyme on Black Friday instead of joining the apparently murderous crowds of crazed holiday shoppers.*

Even the Book Barn was rather crowded, more than usual. However, their selection was greatly improved, because their SF/F section was finally consolidated at their downtown department. I didn't come away with my usual load of books, but I did make some rather spectacular finds:

The Magicians and Mrs. Quent - Galen Beckett
Undertow - Elizabeth Bear
All the Windwracked Stars - Elizabeth Bear
Quantico - Greg Bear
Mir - Alexander Besher

I was tempted by several other books, but decided to be a little more frugal in my choices and only get those books I was really sure I wanted. If I hadn't been so aware of price, I might have gone home with more. Still, I'm really happy to have found what I found.

I'm still working on another book, and I've still got some left over from my last trip, but I cheated and sunk my teeth into the first bit of The Magicians and Mrs. Quent and I have to say, it's kind of fun. I noticed that on the back cover that the word "charming" comes up a lot, and so far it seems apt.

I hope everyone on the f-list had a good Thanksgiving or a good random Thursday, whichever it was for you. And to those still working on NaNoWriMo, I'm cheering you on. Just, yanno, from over here with some leftovers and a couple of dogs.

* I would like to express not only my deepest horror at the actions of the crowds of people in Long Island, but my condolences to the friends, family, and loved ones of the man who died as a result of their madness. There are some moments when I really don't understand humanity and wonder what is wrong with our species.
