I expected that this book would not be one complete story in and of itself and that it would move at a slower clip because it's got to tell a story in SIX BOOKS. Plus, there was a time (also around 1997-ish) that I did read more of this genre before I got tired of it, so it didn't come as much of a surprise. More a reminder of why I don't revisit this genre much.
Iirc there is a fair amount of Kiriel in the next book. She definitely has a fair amount of trauma in her past, as you discerned.
I'm undecided as to whether I'll pick up the next book or not. I really, really liked Diora and Teresa and some of the Southern folks, and the plot does have interesting points. Does Kiriel get better, more interesting, and/or more likeable in the next book? And don't be afraid to spoil me!
