I know this is specifically a response to OSC's virulent homophobia (and believe me, I am all about responding to some virulent homophobia), but what about feminist literature? I have enjoyed some of OSC's books to a point, but the wet noodle female characters drive me nuts. The man simply does not like, get, or respect women.
At any rate, depending on how far you're willing to go with subtext, you could add the starred books. The others clearly belong on this list anyway.
Margaret Atwood - The Robber Bride* Angela Carter - The Bloody Chamber* (actually, whether you're going with subtext or not, this should be on any list of works challenging heterosexual-white-male dominance in fantasy, sci-fi, or fairy tale literature) Emma Donoghue - The Woman Who Gave Birth to Rabbits*, Life Mask, Hood Michael Cunningham - The Hours, Specimen Days Annie Proulx - Close Range (includes the novella "Brokeback Mountain"), The Shipping News and for the poetic: Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass
Thank you for compiling this. Someone should sent OSC a letter letting him know what he hath wrought.
