Here's the thing. OSC is, in fact, a howling bigoted douchebag. I don't give a shit why he is or if he used to be less hateful or if he reviewed literature that contains GLBT+ characters.
That doesn't mitigate anything.
As someone he would have thrown in jail along with my many of my dearest friends and even some of my family members? Please allow me to state my case clearly:
I DO NOT GIVE A SINGLE. SWEET. FLYING. FANCY. FUCK.
I don't give a shit what he used to be or why he arrived at the opinion that I'm less than human and deserve to be punished. I don't give a shit if the Poor Old Bigot just couldn't keep up with these modern times. Like queerness is somehow new or an invention of the 21st century rather than something that has ALWAYS been with humanity and been a natural, normal part of it.
When someone is smacking you and yours in the face, you're officially freed from any obligation to care about their motives or their past or how they came to the point of smacking you in the face.
Oh, and as for him "getting hit over the head". No, he doesn't. He gets reasonably and rightfully called out for being a bigot. And if less and less people are willing to silently let it pass that he says such garbage, that's a sign of hope for the world. Not a bad thing.
Being hit over the head, literally, is what happens to GLBT+ folks every day on this planet when they're often PHYSICALLY AND LITERALLY ASSAULTED by people who, like OSC, don't regard them as human.
Being hit over the head is when a trans woman gets beaten until she has a seizure just for going into the restroom. Being hit over the head is when a gay man in Scotland is beaten and burned to death for his sexuality. Being hit over the head is when GLBT+ youth are bullied until they take their own lives.
