I don't understand what the heck some people are thinking. Dear fucking gods. And I am so with you about the assertiveness thing; it's really easy to say, and gods know, I love to think that I'd be able to be assertive if something like that happened, but in reality we're socialized against it and that's continually reinforced. Add an anxiety disorder triggered by disapproval (for me)... yeah. :-\
Also: Nalini Singh rocks. :D
As a total aside, I didn't realize you were fiction_theory over on LJ! (I just saw this linked elsewhere.) This is coming out of nowhere, but I wanted to thank you for the post you wrote about the Patricia Wrede Thirteenth Child debacle; I wasn't really paying attention to those circles when the first outcry about the book came out, and picked the book up from my library because, hey, western steampunk-ish thing. And came away really, really bothered by the lack of Native Americans in the story, thought that, hey, maybe it was because the main character is in a limited setting... then googled around, saw the outcry. Your post more than any others really put why I was so upset about it in words (because I too wouldn't exist, being that my great-grandfather was Cherokee). So, even though it was a way long time ago now that you posted it, I wanted to thank you. :)
