It's like anything else in writing. In incompetent hands, you'd think that such simple things as commas and compound sentences are *bad*. They're not, but like I said, in incompetent hands...

You definitely should. I have this theory that every single thing people tell you is wrong in writing is not wrong.
It's just that in some cases, some techniques are only viable once or twice. Some techniques just don't work out for 99.9% of situations. And people tend to neglect the .1% of situations in which they do work.
I wish that people would put writing techniques on a scale from "beginner" to "take five years of writing courses and call me before you try this". That way, people wouldn't get the idea that there's good/bad. There's just things are more likely to get screwed up than others.
