Anyone who says "Don't use semi-colons in fiction" should be whapped upside the head with a Naomi Novik novel. Maybe it's genre-related, I don't know. My (published) mom says not to, but I just smile and keep using them anyway because sometimes it's really the only appropriate punctuation to use in that particular situation.
