I think it's more along the lines of the fact that it's 'Female Fantasy'. The woman wants a big strong, powerful man that can protect her (whether or not she needs protecting or not). She wants someone more Indiana Jones than Bill Gates. More Vin Diesel than Adam Sandler. Which is not to say that those types don't work fine in RL (I myself am hideously attracted to funny nerds) but in typical romance fantasy, they don't.
What's ironic is that the 'iconic male' for romance fantasy also matches the iconic male for men's pulp books. Heh.
