A moment of vitriol

Dear Writer Who Made the Snarky Comment About Romance Novels and the Readers Thereof,

I usually try not to be this crude, but I feel that for your completely wrong headed statement about an entire genre and the people who enjoy that genre, you've earned a giant FUCK YOU.

Let me repeat that. Fuck you. With a rusty gardening implement.

I get it, romance isn't your thing. I have no issue with that. Romance isn't everyone's cup of tea, just as mystery and science fiction aren't either. And you could have said as much in an infinitely more polite way than you did.

But, no. You had to be clever about it. Because making fun of other people's tastes is a good way to show just how smart and funny you are, isn't it? Wait, it's not. It just makes you come off as being snotty and unpleasant, and I suspect that you actually are that snotty and unpleasant.

Romance is some folks' favorite genre to read and write (some of those people I call friend, too), and those people aren't any less intelligent, less sensitive or less sophisticated than you. Neither are their books. You may feel that you can divide the world up into Big Important Tragical Literature and Stupid Books For Stupid People - but it doesn't work like that.

Trust me, to someone else out there, you and your genre look rather pathetic and bewildering. You wouldn't appreciate it if they made rude remarks about the people who read and write in your genre. So why in the world would you do that exact same thing to someone else?

Oh, right. Snotty and unpleasant. Sorry, I forgot about that for a moment.

I realize I won't change your opinion about romance and frankly I don't want to. I don't care whether you like it or not. I just would appreciate it if you refrained from sterotyping and insulting those that do. So maybe you could consider making less stupid comments or at least thinking about the comments you make a little longer before you hit the enter key.

Have A Merry Fuck You,
Meg

PS - While we're throwing snarky comments around, I read your material and you have bugger all to get smug about.

Good for you. Romance writers and readers are among the funniest, smartest, and nicest people on the planet.

I've tried writing romances more than once, and somehow don't have the knack of putting all my romantic stories into words, which is so too bad! It takes a lot of talent--anyway, that's not the point, which, good for you.

And it's no surprise regarding the PS, no surprise at all.

Amen to that. I really do take personal offense when people get on their high horses about the romance genre and look down on it just to make themselves feel better.

And it's no surprise regarding the PS, no surprise at all.

Yeah, and given that the writer in question works in the SF/F genre, it's rather hypocritical to be making those sort of remarks. I mean, how many times has SF/F been the butt of jokes from other people? What sort of rude things can be said about SF/F fans? A lot, probably.

Nobody in this genre has any business picking on other genres.
