So, um, one of the agents I emailed with a query letter? Emailed me back asking for a synopsis and 50 pages within hours of me sending that email. Not sure what that means, except that they want more materials to judge whether my novel is any good and I should continue to be patient and professional and not, you know, get any unnecessary hopes up.

Still, am I wrong to sort of be trembling with joy? Y/N?

Having been in a rather similar spot just a few weeks ago, I'd say go ahead and tremble with joy. My rationale was: Even if there's a rejection waiting at the end, this is cool, and I should feel the cool. You can have joy and keep your expectations reasonable, right?

And how many chances in your life are you going to have to experience this exact feeling? None. No other time will be the first time.

Oh, I totally plan to revel for a while. And you know what, I'm oddly okay if it ends in a rejection, because this is the first go around for me, and some people do this for years and don't even get a response, so I'm ahead of the game, right?

I'm biased in thinking that's a good idea, 'cause that's how I think. :)

Oh, dude, I totally plan to party it up. And by party it up, I mean treat myself to some books and maybe some chocolate that I TOTALLY SHOULDN'T BE HAVING, BUT ANYWAY and just remember how good this feels.

Yay! Big hugs! You don't have to tremble with joy when I'm here to do it for you!

Oh, was that a question?

Yes, it's perfectly fine, trembling with joy is part of the, you know, joy of it all!

I've got my fingers and toes crossed for you :)

Celebrate away! If you've proved nothing else, it's that your writing isn't utter slushpile-worthy, and that alone is worth celebrating. After all, if there's one thing good writers are certain of, it's their writing is crap. You may not score a publishing contract on the first hit with this agent, but you've at least got thaer attention. Celebrate!

Well, it means the query letter worked, which is good. And I'm hoping my actual writing isn't slush pile worthy. I'm just excited!

Maybe my work is one step above crap. Maybe's it's just tripe! :)

We celebrated last night with German food (because nothing says victory like sauerbrauten and red cabbage!!)

Congratulations! That's very exciting and very good news. Right now you know that your novel is both engaging and marketable, and your query letter works! And it is a really good note to start things off on. Good luck!

Yeah, the fact that she responded so quickly surprised me, because I really had resigned myself to settling in for a wait of weeks and weeks before anyone got around to even rejecting me. So there's that. And I do anticipate that it will be several weeks before even this agent can get back to me to say yea or nay, but still!

The query letter is good, and I really was sweating bullets over that.
